Sparta Prague

Founded in 1893, Sparta Prague are one of the oldest and most successful clubs in Czech football. Established as Athletic Club Královské Vinohrady before adopting the Sparta name the following year, the club became a dominant force in the early development of the game in Czechoslovakia. Sparta's history stretches across several political eras and numerous changes to the country's football landscape, while their home at Letná has remained central to their identity. 1. Sparta didn't start out as Sparta
   The club was originally founded as Athletic Club Královské Vinohrady in 1893, adopting the Sparta name in 1894.

   Sparta adopted their dark red shirts after club official František Košík returned from England impressed by the colours worn by Arsenal.
3. They were once known as the 'Iron Sparta'
   Sparta's formidable team of the 1920s earned the nickname Železná Sparta — the "Iron Sparta" — during one of the club's great early periods.
4. Sparta won an early European trophy
   They captured the Mitropa Cup in 1927, one of Europe's most prestigious international club competitions before the creation of UEFA tournaments.
5. Their name survived a string of official changes
   Political changes in Czechoslovakia saw the club renamed several times during the 20th century, including periods as Sparta ČKD Sokolovo and Spartak Praha Sokolovo, before the traditional Sparta identity was restored.
