Sometimes, restoring a football shirt is about much more than simply replacing a damaged sponsor or badge. Occasionally, a project comes along that requires a completely different approach, particularly when the original materials are no longer available and an off-the-shelf replacement simply doesn't exist.
That was exactly the challenge we faced when a Football Shirt Revival customer from Germany contacted us about his Manchester United 2017/18 away shirt – the Adidas Adizero authentic player version.
The shirt itself was in immaculate condition. Unfortunately, its distinctive Manchester United crest had deteriorated badly, cracking, peeling and eventually breaking away from the fabric.
What followed was a restoration project involving research, bespoke design, specialist manufacturing and more than a little patience.
A Perfect Shirt with One Major Problem
Manchester United's 2017/18 away shirt features a distinctive black and dark grey geometric pattern, inspired by the club's iconic early 1990s designs, complemented by white Adidas detailing and a monochrome club crest.
On the authentic Adizero player version, the crest isn't traditionally embroidered. Instead, it's a lightweight, heat-applied badge featuring raised detailing, designed to complement the shirt's performance construction.
Unfortunately, these types of applications can deteriorate over time, even when the surrounding shirt remains in excellent condition.
In this particular case, the original crest had become brittle, cracked and started peeling away. Eventually, the badge was beyond saving.
The frustrating part? Everything else about the shirt was practically perfect.
Our customer had already spent an entire year trying to find someone who could repair it, without success.
During a visit to the UK, he approached Football Shirt Revival to see whether we could finally provide a solution.
Why Was This Manchester United Badge So Difficult to Replace?
At first glance, replacing a Manchester United crest might sound straightforward. After all, it's one of the most recognisable football badges in the world.
However, this particular version presented a rather unusual problem.
The 2017/18 away shirt featured a white crest with black detailing, rather than the more commonly available black crest with white detailing.
Although replacement Manchester United badges could be found in other colour combinations, none were suitable for this specific shirt.
The reversed colour arrangement was essential. Using the wrong version would have immediately compromised the shirt's appearance and authenticity.
As far as we could establish, this particular colour combination was effectively unique to this shirt, making a suitable replacement extremely difficult to source.
There was another complication, too.
The original badge wasn't a standard flat transfer. It featured a distinctive raised construction, with textured sections and defined edges that gave the crest its characteristic appearance.
We could have recreated the design using a conventional DTF transfer, but that would have produced a flat finish.
For a shirt in otherwise immaculate condition, that simply wasn't good enough.
Our aim was to recreate the original crest as closely as possible, not merely cover the space where it had once been.
Creating a Bespoke 1:1 Manchester United Crest
With no suitable ready-made replacement available, we decided to create our own.
Using the original badge as a reference, we carefully reconstructed the design to match its dimensions, proportions, colours and detailing.
The objective was a 1:1 recreation of the original crest, including the intricate lettering, central shield, decorative elements and distinctive raised finish.
Rather than producing a conventional printed transfer, we worked with one of our specialist suppliers to manufacture the design using raised polyurethane (PU).
This process allowed us to reproduce the dimensional qualities of the original badge, including the subtle textured surfaces and raised edges that give it a much more premium appearance.
It was exactly the type of finish we were looking for.
Of course, getting there wasn't quite as straightforward as we'd hoped!
Third Time Lucky – Getting the Crest Exactly Right
One of the most important aspects of specialist football shirt restoration is knowing when a replacement isn't quite right.
And this particular project certainly tested that principle.
Our first manufactured crest arrived with the wrong dimensions. Although the design itself was promising, the sizing wasn't accurate enough for a faithful restoration.
We went back to the supplier, made the necessary corrections and arranged another production run.
The second version arrived with a different problem: the background had been produced as fully transparent, rather than incorporating the solid white areas required by the original design.
Again, it wasn't suitable.
We weren't prepared to compromise the restoration by applying something that didn't properly match the shirt.
After further communication, adjustments and another production attempt, the third version finally arrived.
Correct dimensions. Correct colours. Correct construction. And, most importantly, the raised finish we'd been aiming for.
It had taken several attempts, but we finally had a replacement worthy of the shirt.
Removing the Damaged Crest and Preparing the Shirt
With the correct replacement ready, attention turned to preparing the original shirt.
The damaged crest had already suffered considerable deterioration, leaving behind remnants of the original application and adhesive.
Removing these traces required care, particularly because the shirt's dark geometric pattern needed to remain completely intact.
The last thing we wanted was to solve one problem while creating another.
We carefully worked through the remaining material, cleaning and preparing the application area until it was suitable for the replacement crest.
As with any restoration, preparation is just as important as the final application. Even the best replacement badge won't produce a professional result if the underlying fabric hasn't been properly prepared.
Once we were satisfied, the new crest could finally be positioned and applied.
The Finished Result – Better Than Photographs Can Show
The transformation was remarkable.
Where there had previously been a badly deteriorated, almost completely missing crest, the shirt now featured a beautifully defined Manchester United badge that closely reproduced the original appearance.
The white detailing contrasted perfectly with the dark fabric, while the raised PU construction restored the depth and texture that a standard flat transfer simply couldn't achieve.
In photographs, the finished crest looks excellent.
In person, it's even better.
The raised lettering, textured surfaces and sharply defined details make a significant difference when viewed up close, particularly as the light catches the individual elements.
Most importantly, the replacement looks completely at home on the shirt.
Rather than appearing like an obvious repair, it complements the original Adidas branding, Chevrolet sponsor and distinctive patterned fabric.
After spending so long searching for a solution, our customer finally had his Manchester United shirt restored to a standard that did justice to its original condition.
With the work complete, the shirt was carefully packaged and shipped back to him in Germany.
Why Specialist Football Shirt Restoration Matters
This project is a perfect example of why football shirt restoration isn't always as simple as applying a new transfer.
Modern football shirts increasingly feature specialist materials, lightweight badges, textured sponsors and unique finishes that can be difficult or impossible to replace using conventional products.
When these elements deteriorate, an otherwise immaculate shirt can become difficult to wear, display or enjoy.
At Football Shirt Revival, we believe the aim should always be to preserve as much of the original shirt as possible while ensuring that any replacement is appropriate to the design.
Sometimes that means using a carefully matched DTF transfer. On other occasions, as with this Manchester United shirt, it means developing a bespoke solution with a specialist manufacturer.
Not every restoration requires this level of work, but when it does, the extra effort can make all the difference.
Giving Football Shirts a Second Life
What makes this particular restoration so satisfying is the journey behind it.
A customer in Germany had spent a year searching for a solution. A shirt in beautiful condition had been let down by one deteriorating component. And a seemingly simple badge replacement turned into a project requiring three manufacturing attempts before everything was right.
The finished result made the persistence worthwhile.
It's also a reminder that a damaged crest doesn't necessarily mean the end of a favourite football shirt.
With the right approach, specialist materials and attention to detail, even unusual restoration challenges can sometimes be overcome.
At Football Shirt Revival, that's exactly what we're passionate about: preserving genuine football shirts, respecting their original designs and giving them the opportunity to be enjoyed for many more years.
